Police Lathi-Charge Turns Agartala Unity Promo Fest into Chaos
Dec 13, 2025
What was intended to be a grand celebration ended in chaos and controversy on the final day of the Unity Promo Fest at Swami Vivekananda Ground after police resorted to a lathi-charge on the crowd, leaving several people injured, including working journalists.
The incident occurred during a live performance by popular Indian singer Jubin Nautiyal, organized by the Tripura Tourism Department. Despite many attendees holding valid VIP and VVIP passes, police personnel, allegedly led by the Additional Superintendent of Police (Urban) Dhruba Nath, used force to control the gathering, triggering panic and disorder among the crowd.
Eyewitnesses reported that entry and exit gates were broken amid the confusion, worsening the situation and putting thousands of attendees at risk. Several fans, including women and young attendees, were reportedly beaten despite complying with police instructions.
The situation further escalated when journalists covering the event were allegedly assaulted, raising serious concerns over press freedom and media safety. One reporter sustained injuries while performing their professional duties, drawing sharp condemnation from media bodies and civil society groups.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with critics blaming gross mismanagement and poor planning by the Tripura Tourism Department. Allegations have surfaced that indiscriminate distribution of VIP and VVIP passes, including to social media content creators and non-essential invitees, led to severe overcrowding and administrative failure.
As visuals of the chaos circulate widely on social media, questions are being raised over crowd management, accountability, and the use of force against civilians and journalists in what was meant to be a peaceful programme.
