Iran Re-Arrests Nobel Peace Laureate Narges Mohammadi

Iranian authorities have arrested Nobel Peace Prize laureate and prominent human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, according to her Paris-based foundation. She was detained on Friday while attending a memorial ceremony for human rights lawyer Khosrow Alikordi, who was recently found dead under disputed circumstances.

Mohammadi, 53, had been on medical furlough since December 2024, after concerns were raised about her health. Although she was expected to return to prison soon after, she had remained on furlough until her arrest. Supporters had repeatedly warned in recent months that she faced a high risk of being re-imprisoned.

One of Iran’s most outspoken human rights advocates, Mohammadi has spent much of the past two decades in detention, largely at Tehran’s notorious Evin prison. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her long-standing fight against oppression and for the rights of women and political prisoners in Iran.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee strongly condemned her arrest, describing it as brutal and calling on Iranian authorities to immediately clarify her whereabouts, ensure her safety, and release her without delay.
