Sikkim Assembly Grants ST Status to 12 Communities

The Sikkim Legislative Assembly on Friday unanimously passed a proposal to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to twelve communities in the state. The House approved the recommendations outlined in a detailed report submitted by a high-level committee constituted by the Government of Sikkim.
The decision is aimed at extending official Scheduled Tribe benefits and constitutional rights to members of these communities. Legislators expressed confidence that the move would promote social justice, inclusive development, and equal opportunities across the state.
The Assembly described the decision as a significant milestone in strengthening social security and ensuring fair representation for all communities in Sikkim.
