Government Agrees to Hold Discussion on Air Pollution in Lok Sabha
Dec 12, 2025
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday said the government is prepared to hold a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the issue of air pollution. He noted that since the matter was raised by the Leader of the Opposition during the Business Advisory Committee meeting, the government will examine how to structure the discussion in accordance with parliamentary rules.
Rijiju reiterated that the government has been open to debating all major public issues from the very first day of the session, emphasising that it aims to find solutions while considering the suggestions offered by opposition parties.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi described air pollution as a critical challenge facing the country and stressed that it should not be viewed through an ideological lens. He expressed confidence that both the government and the opposition would fully agree on holding a discussion in the House. Gandhi urged the government to formulate a concrete plan to tackle air pollution in cities, assuring that the opposition, including the Congress, would support such an initiative.
Opposition parties have been pressing for a debate on the country’s deteriorating air quality since the beginning of the winter session. Amid growing concern among MPs, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla earlier held discussions with both the government and the opposition regarding the possibility of a detailed debate on the matter. On Thursday, Congress whip Manickam Tagore also raised the issue in the House, warning that a health emergency caused by hazardous pollution levels is putting millions of Indians at risk.
