Union Road, Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday that India has reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by 736 lakh metric tonnes through the adoption of 20 per cent ethanol blending in petrol.
Responding to supplementaries during Question Hour, Gadkari said ethanol is a green fuel that helps curb pollution while increasing farmers’ income. He noted that India imports fossil fuels worth ₹22 lakh crore annually, stressing the need to curb this dependence in order to move towards becoming a developed nation.
