CM Dr. Manik Saha Calls for Stronger Democratic Pillars on International Human Rights Day
Dec 10, 2025
Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on Wednesday inaugurated the International Human Rights Day celebration at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala, organised by the Tripura Human Rights Commission.
In his address, Dr. Saha said that human rights can be truly protected only when individuals uphold values in their thoughts, conduct, and consciousness. Stressing the need to reinforce all four pillars of democracy, he said this is essential for safeguarding human rights and ensuring proper implementation of related laws.
The Chief Minister noted that the Indian Constitution already provides comprehensive human rights protections, and urged citizens to be aware of these safeguards. He cautioned against the misuse of human rights for unethical or disruptive activities.
Referring to this year’s theme—“Human Rights Are Part of Our Everyday Life”—Dr. Saha said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently prioritised human rights through welfare initiatives such as Ujjwala Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, and Ayushman Bharat, benefiting children, women, farmers, and unemployed youth.
He added that the state government remains vigilant on human rights issues, taking prompt action on reported violations, and emphasised that maintaining law and order is closely linked to protecting these rights.
Highlighting regional development, Dr. Saha said that the Northeastern states, once neglected, have experienced significant progress under the Prime Minister’s Act East Policy. Tripura, he said, is moving ahead steadily through various state and central initiatives. During the event, he also launched the Tripura Human Rights Commission’s newsletter. The Commission was set up in 2016.
Commission Chairman Arindam Lodh, speaking as a distinguished guest, said that the spirit of human rights is reflected even in the national song Vande Mataram. Other speakers, including Law Secretary Shankari Das, DGP Anurag, Advocate General Shaktimoy Chakraborty, and Tripura Women’s Commission Chairperson Jharna Debbarma, highlighted the importance of greater public awareness on human rights.
