PTI Says Water Cannons Used to Disperse Protest Outside Adiala Jail

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday accused authorities of using water cannons to disperse protesters—among them former prime minister Imran Khan’s sisters—who staged a sit-in outside Adiala jail after being denied permission to meet him.

In a statement posted on X, the party claimed that officials deployed water cannons against Khan’s family members and PTI supporters despite a court order allowing a meeting with the imprisoned PTI founder. The party said the refusal to permit the visit prompted the sit-in.

PTI condemned the use of water cannons on what it described as a peaceful gathering, calling it a “shameless violation” of Khan’s prisoner rights and an “assault on the constitutional rights” of citizens protesting government actions. The party urged international human rights organisations to speak out against what it termed “inhumane and authoritarian” measures.

Imran Khan, the cricketer-turned-politician, has been held at Adiala jail since August 2023 and faces multiple cases, including corruption and terrorism charges, following his removal from office in a no-confidence vote in 2022.
