Powerful 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northeastern Japan

A strong 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Japan late last night, shaking wide areas and prompting tsunami alerts along the Pacific coast. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake’s epicentre was located roughly 80 kilometres off the coast of Aomori Prefecture.

Authorities reported more than 20 injuries across affected regions. A tsunami of up to 70 centimetres reached several coastal communities, leading officials to issue evacuation orders for approximately 90,000 residents.

Several bullet train services were suspended as operators conducted safety inspections. Nuclear facilities in the region also carried out urgent checks. The Nuclear Regulation Authority confirmed that about 118 gallons of water spilled at the Rokkasho nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Aomori, but said the incident posed no safety risk.

Emergency services remain on high alert as aftershocks continue to be recorded. Further assessments of damage and infrastructure are ongoing.
