Amit Shah Says Vande Mataram Symbolises Patriotism and National Consciousness
Dec 09, 2025
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said that the national song Vande Mataram has become a timeless symbol of patriotism, sacrifice and national consciousness, shaping the country’s freedom movement and continuing to inspire generations.
Initiating a discussion in the Rajya Sabha on the 150th anniversary of the song, Mr. Shah described Vande Mataram as an “immortal work” that awakens a sense of duty and devotion towards the motherland. He said the song was essential not only during the freedom struggle but remains equally significant today and will continue to guide the nation as it strives to become a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
Mr. Shah recalled that freedom fighters began their meetings by singing Vande Mataram, and even today, soldiers making the supreme sacrifice at the border utter the words as an expression of courage and devotion. He said Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, through the song, established the cultural tradition of viewing the nation as a mother and strengthened the idea of cultural nationalism.
The Home Minister said the song endured restrictions, oppression and hardships but still resonated across the country, spreading from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. He added that Vande Mataram emerged against the backdrop of centuries of invasions that had weakened India’s cultural identity, and as a response to British attempts to impose new cultural norms.
Mr. Shah expressed confidence that discussions in both Houses of Parliament would help future generations understand the true significance and legacy of the song.
