Japan has summoned China’s ambassador after the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning conducted about 100 take-offs and landings near Japan’s southwestern island chain over the weekend. Tokyo condemned the maneuvers as dangerous, accusing Chinese forces of directing fire-control radar at Japanese aircraft.
China rejected the allegations, claiming instead that Japanese actions endangered flight safety and accusing Tokyo of “smearing and slandering” Beijing.
The confrontation comes shortly after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi warned that Japan could respond decisively to any Chinese military activity that threatens national security. Relations have further strained as China urges its citizens to avoid travel to Japan and has halted imports of Japanese seafood following Tokyo’s release of treated Fukushima wastewater.
The episode reflects escalating regional tensions, particularly over Taiwan, which lies just 110 kilometers from Japan’s Okinawa Islands. As China increases military and political pressure on the island, the United States has expressed support for Japan, while President Trump has remained publicly silent ahead of planned trade talks with Beijing.
