Assam Amends Population Policy to Exempt Vulnerable Communities

The Assam government has introduced amendments to the Population and Women Empowerment Policy, 2017, bringing the rules in line with the state Cabinet’s October 23 decision to exempt certain vulnerable communities from population-control norms.

Announcing the changes, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the relaxation was essential to protect these groups from demographic decline. He warned that strict adherence to the original policy could endanger their survival.

“If we stick to the policy, these populations will lose their distinct identities and gradually become extinct in the next 50 years,” Sarma said, stressing the need for targeted safeguards.

The revised rules are expected to provide these communities with greater protection while ensuring that wider population-management measures continue elsewhere in the state.
