Workshop on Rabi onion cultivation highlights state’s focus on agri-growth

Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratanlal Nath emphasized the need for farmers to adopt scientific farming methods using modern technology to increase crop production.

Speaking at the inauguration of a workshop on Rabi onion cultivation at the Tripura Agricultural College auditorium in Lembuchhara on Friday, he said agriculture is the key to the country’s development, and the state government is giving utmost priority to the growth of the agricultural sector.

The minister highlighted that the government is focusing not only on agriculture but also on allied sectors such as horticulture and fisheries. He added that over the past seven years, the state government has provided ₹225 crore in subsidies for the purchase of agricultural machinery. During this period, 144 markets were established for crop marketing, with an expenditure of ₹303 crore. Currently, 46% of Tripura’s GSDP comes from the agriculture sector.

“Kisan (farmers) are the providers of food. The state and central governments are implementing various schemes for their welfare,” he said. He also pointed out that Tripura’s climate is highly suitable for onion cultivation, and scientists at the state’s agricultural college have successfully grown Rabi onions experimentally. He urged farmers to take advantage of this opportunity and actively engage in onion cultivation.

Dr. Debashish Sen, Principal of Tripura Agricultural College,  Deepak Kumar Das, Director of Horticulture and Soil Conservation; Anil Katmire, General Manager of NABARD; and Pradeep Baran Roy, ISC member of ICAR were present. Around 300 onion farmers from eight districts of the state attended the workshop.

As part of the initiative, the guests distributed 40 kg of onion seeds, farm equipment, earthworms, organic fertilizers, fungicides, and pesticides to the farmers. Two farmers were also awarded Soil Health Cards to promote scientific and sustainable cultivation practices.
