Aishwarya Rai Bachchan captivated audiences at the fifth Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, offering candid insights into her journey from global pageant winner to internationally acclaimed actor.
Speaking at an In Conversation panel, the Bollywood star revisited the milestone moment that propelled her into the public eye — being crowned Miss World in 1994. She noted that the title, encouraged by members of the media who urged her to represent India, became far more meaningful than a traditional beauty contest.
“During my time on the international stage, I realized how little the world understood about my country,” she said, recalling how she was frequently asked questions that reflected outdated perceptions of India. “Standing as the only Indian contestant, I was asked about tigers, snake charmers, and education systems that felt so archaic. It made me reflect on our global perception.”
This experience, she explained, strengthened her commitment to the Miss World “Beauty with a Purpose” mission, inspiring her to use her platform for social impact. “I was just so glad that I got the opportunity to use that title as a larger platform to effect contribution and change,” she told the audience.
Rai Bachchan also reflected on her transition into cinema, beginning with her screen debut in Mani Ratnam’s acclaimed 1997 Tamil film Iruvar. Throughout the discussion, she emphasized the importance of identity, representation, and the strength of women in shaping both her personal and professional path.
Her appearance marked one of the festival’s most talked-about sessions, highlighting her enduring influence and continued commitment to meaningful storytelling.
