Asif Ali Zardari Approves Asim Munir as Pakistan’s First Chief of Defence Forces
Dec 05, 2025
President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the appointment of General Asim Munir as Pakistan’s first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), a newly created position that places him in command of all three branches of the armed forces. General Munir will hold the post for a five-year term while continuing to serve as Chief of the Army Staff.
The creation of the CDF role was enabled through the 27th Constitutional Amendment, recently passed by Parliament. Supporters of the amendment argue that the new position will enhance coordination among the army, navy and air force by creating a unified command structure.
However, the move has drawn criticism from political analysts and opposition voices, who view it as a further consolidation of military authority over civilian institutions. Critics claim the appointment underscores the military’s longstanding influence over Pakistan’s political system and raises concerns about the balance of power between civilian leadership and the armed forces.
Reports of delays in the decision had sparked speculation about hesitation within the government, including concerns attributed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Analysts say the eventual approval reflects the military’s continued sway in national governance.
The government has not yet issued a detailed statement explaining the strategic rationale behind the new position, while public debate continues over its potential impact on Pakistan’s civil-military relations.
