Fake News a Major Threat to Democracy, Says I&B Minister Vaishnaw

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday warned that fake news, particularly AI-generated deepfakes, poses a significant threat to democracy. Responding to supplementaries during the Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, he said the government has published a new draft rule aimed at identifying and acting against deepfake content.

Vaishnaw noted that both the government and the Press Council of India are closely monitoring complaints against television channels and newspapers. He stressed that fake news and misleading narratives must be actively countered, adding that it is the shared responsibility of the Central and State governments, as well as civil society, to preserve and strengthen public trust.

Highlighting the impact of the Digital India initiative, the minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ushered in a digital revolution whose positive effects are visible across the country. He also pointed out that the enactment of a strict law to regulate online money gaming is benefiting millions of families nationwide.
