Northeast’s First Private Rail Corridor

In a breakthrough for Assam’s industrial landscape, young entrepreneur Kanak Deka from Kamalpur, Kamrup district, has achieved what few in India have attempted—building the Northeast’s first private rail corridor, complete with two privately purchased trains and a fully mapped railway station on the Indian Railways network.

What began as a bold idea has materialized into a landmark infrastructure project developed under the Prime Minister Gati Shakti Scheme. Spread across 300 bighas, the privately built corridor has converted a once-quiet region into a fast-rising logistics and manufacturing hub.

The project, which will soon be inaugurated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is expected to generate nearly 1,000 jobs, offering a major boost to the local economy and opening new pathways for industrial growth in the Northeast.

Deka’s total investment of Rs 245 crore, along with an expanded Rs 500-crore commitment under Advantage Assam 2, underscores the scale and ambition of the venture. The facility has already drawn interest from several major multinational companies, including Tata, Mahindra, Sonalika, and Hindustan Unilever, all of which plan to utilize the corridor’s logistics services.

Industry observers note that the creation of a privately owned railway station—integrated into India’s national railway grid—is an exceptional accomplishment for any individual entrepreneur in the country.

For Assam, the corridor represents more than an infrastructural upgrade; it embodies a new vision of possibility and self-driven growth. And for Kanak Deka, it marks the realization of a dream—one that positions him as one of the most promising and influential young industrial leaders emerging from Northeast India.
