Major Drug Smuggling Bid Foiled at Assam Border; Tripura Truck Driver detained

A major cannabis smuggling attempt from Tripura collapsed at the Assam border on Monday when Assam Police at the Churaibari checkpost intercepted a truck carrying a massive haul of dry ganja.

The truck bearing registration number – NL06A–7358, which began its journey from Jirania in West Tripura, entered Assam around 10 a.m. During the routine checking, officers initially found nothing suspicious inside the vehicle. But a closer look at the truck’s exterior sparked doubt. Hidden ingeniously along both sides of the outer body were dozens of neatly packed bundles.

A detailed search led to the discovery of 68 packets of dry cannabis, weighing 370 kilograms in total—one of the larger consignments seized in recent months. Officials estimate the black-market value of the haul to be over Rs 2 crore, according to Unakoti Additional SP Anirban Sharma.

The driver, Rakesh Chakraborty, a resident of Khamarbari under Jirania subdivision, was immediately detained. During questioning, he allegedly confessed that he was transporting the contraband to “Lung Shillong” for a payment of Rs 30,000. He also admitted that this was not his first trip; similar consignments had been ferried out of Tripura earlier using the same method.

A case under the NDPS Act has been registered, and police said that a deeper probe will follow to identify the network behind the operation.

The incident has once again revived concerns over the effectiveness of Tripura’s anti-narcotics enforcement. Despite travelling across the National Highway and passing multiple police outposts, the truck managed to leave the state without obstruction—only to be caught the moment it entered Assam. For many, this seizure underscores a recurring pattern: Tripura often being used as a transit point while enforcement gaps continue to be exposed.
