Indonesia Floods Claim 442 Lives; Over 400 Still Missing as Rescue Efforts Intensify

In Indonesia, the death toll from catastrophic floods and landslides triggered by cyclonic rains has climbed to 442, according to the National Disaster Management Agency. Authorities said on Sunday that another 402 people remain missing across North Sumatra, West Sumatra and Aceh, with rescue teams facing immense challenges in reaching the hardest-hit regions.

Much of the devastation is centred on Sumatra Island, where thousands of residents have been isolated for days. The cities of Central Tapanuli and Sibolga remain completely inaccessible due to damaged infrastructure and blocked routes.

President Prabowo Subianto visited the affected areas today, meeting survivors and reviewing ongoing relief measures as communities struggle with the aftermath of the disaster.

The floods and landslides were triggered by Cyclone Senyar, an extremely rare tropical storm that struck Indonesia last week, unleashing torrential rains that swept away homes and submerged thousands of buildings.

The extreme weather has affected several neighbouring countries as well. Heavy rains and storms have battered Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines and Sri Lanka, impacting millions and pushing the overall death toll across Asia to more than 900 this month.
