Indonesia Disaster Toll Rises to 248 after Tsunami, Earthquake, and Floods
Nov 29, 2025
At least 248 people have died and more than 100 remain missing following a series of natural disasters in Indonesia’s Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra provinces. Rescue efforts have been hampered by damaged roads, downed communication lines, and destroyed bridges, making many areas difficult to reach.
Authorities reported that monsoon rains over the past week caused rivers to overflow in North Sumatra, sweeping away homes and submerging thousands of buildings in mountain villages. Compounding the crisis, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Aceh on Thursday.
Relief aircraft have been delivering aid and supplies to the hardest-hit areas, including Central Tapanuli in North Sumatra, as officials warn that the confirmed death toll is likely to rise further.
