Meghalaya Cabinet Approves SOP on VIP Beacons

The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to regulate the use of VIP beacons, flashers, sirens and tinted glasses on government vehicles. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the new guidelines will clearly define which categories of officials are authorised to use each type of equipment, a step aimed at curbing misuse and ensuring uniformity across government departments.

Sangma explained that the SOP was necessary to bring clarity and prevent arbitrary use of such devices, which are often associated with misuse of power and inconvenience to the public.

In addition to the SOP, the Cabinet also cleared the Additional Households Electrification proposal under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). The project seeks to provide electricity to villages and households that were left out during the earlier electrification drive based on the 2011 Census.

According to the Chief Minister, many new villages were formed after 2011, and several households remained unlisted during previous surveys. In 2022, the state government requested the Centre to include these additional areas under the RDSS. The Union government has since sanctioned nearly ₹500 crore for the initiative.

Sangma said the electrification drive will help ensure that all households in Meghalaya receive power connectivity, strengthening the state’s rural infrastructure and improving overall development indicators.
