Assam CM Declares Zubeen Garg’s Death in Singapore a Murder, Not an Accident

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday told the state assembly that the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore was “not an accident” but “a clear case of murder.” He said investigators have already identified the person responsible, along with several accomplices.

Speaking in the assembly, Sarma, who also holds the Home portfolio, said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) handling the case has added murder charges within days of the incident and is preparing a “watertight” chargesheet, expected to be filed in December.

So far, seven people have been arrested in connection with the case, 252 witnesses examined, and 29 items seized, the Chief Minister informed the House.

Garg, a renowned singer from Assam, drowned while swimming off the coast of Singapore, where he had traveled to attend the North East India Festival. Initial reports had suggested accidental drowning. However, Sarma stated that early findings convinced investigators the incident was “not negligence, nor rash behaviour,” but “murder, plain and simple,” leading to the inclusion of Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in the charges.

The Chief Minister also indicated that the alleged motive, linked to financial matters, would “shock the people of Assam,” noting that the inquiry traces events back nearly eight years. Sarma stressed that “no one who betrayed Zubeen will be spared.”

The case has sparked considerable attention in Assam, with the SIT conducting extensive investigations and coordinating with authorities to collect evidence from Singapore. The final chargesheet and detailed evidence are awaited, and further updates are expected once the case formally proceeds in the courts.
