Rising Tensions in Bangladesh: Baul Singer Arrest Sparks Cultural Uproar
Nov 25, 2025
The arrest of renowned Baul singer Abul Sarkar has ignited a wave of protests in Bangladesh, highlighting a growing struggle between the country’s rich cultural heritage and rising hardline religious movements.
On Monday, dozens of singers and artists gathered in front of the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka, demanding the immediate release of Sarkar and justice for his followers, who were reportedly attacked in Manikganj during demonstrations over his arrest. The protest, organized under the banner ‘Sadhuguru Bhakta and Oli-Awlia Ashekan Parishad,’ called attention to what participants described as an “organized assault on Bangladesh’s centuries-old syncretic traditions.”
Abul Sarkar, president of the Bangladesh Baul Samity, was detained on November 20 in Madaripur district for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, according to local media. The arrest has triggered nationwide concern over the future of Baul culture, a spiritual movement celebrated for its inclusivity, openness, and cultural plurality.
Experts warn that hardline religious groups, notably those under the Tawhidi Janata banner, are increasingly exploiting political uncertainty to assert influence and intimidate cultural communities, raising fears about the shrinking space for artistic and spiritual expression in Bangladesh.
For many, the controversy is about more than a single arrest; it represents a cultural battle for the soul of Bangladesh, where centuries-old traditions of harmony and spiritual diversity face unprecedented challenges.
