Legendary Actor Dharmendra Passes Away at 89; PM Modi Leads Nation in Mourning


Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, widely celebrated as the He-Man of Indian Cinema, passed away on Monday at the age of 89 after a prolonged illness.

Dharmendra’s demise marks the conclusion of a glorious chapter in Indian cinema. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he delivered some of Hindi cinema’s most memorable performances in iconic films such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Phool Aur Patthar, Satyakam, and Yaadon Ki Baaraat. Admired for his versatility, screen presence, and warmth, he captivated generations of audiences and set benchmarks that continue to influence actors today.

Making his debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, Dharmendra went on to feature in over 300 films, earning a reputation as one of the most successful and charismatic stars in Bollywood history. He holds the record for the highest number of hit films in Hindi cinema and remained active in the industry well into his later years. His final appearance was in the 2024 film Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya.

In 2012, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third-highest civilian award, in recognition of his contributions to Indian cinema. Beyond films, Dharmendra briefly entered public life, serving as a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from 2004 to 2009, representing Bikaner, Rajasthan, as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the actor’s passing. In a social media post, the Prime Minister described Dharmendra as an “iconic film personality” and a “phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played.” Modi noted that his simplicity, humility, and warmth endeared him to people across the country. He extended condolences to the late actor’s family, friends, and millions of fans worldwide.

Dharmendra leaves behind a rich legacy filled with cinematic brilliance, kindness, and an enduring bond with audiences. His passing is mourned not only by the film fraternity but by admirers across the world who grew up watching and loving his work.
