Justice Surya Kant Sworn In as 53rd Chief Justice of India


Justice Surya Kant on Monday took oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony attended by several high-ranking dignitaries, including Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and J.P. Nadda. Justice Surya Kant succeeds Justice B.R. Gavai, who demitted office on Sunday.

Born in 1962 in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant began practising law in 1984 at the District Court in Hisar, specialising in constitutional, service and civil matters. Over the course of his career, he represented various universities, boards, corporations, banks, and even the High Court. In 2000, he became the youngest Advocate General of Haryana.

He was appointed a permanent judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2004 and elevated as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2018. In May 2019, he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of India.
