Agartala, Nov 21: A strong earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck near the India–Bangladesh border on Friday morning, sending shockwaves through Tripura and triggering panic among residents. The tremor, which occurred around 10:09 a.m., lasted for several seconds, prompting people to rush out of their homes, offices, and shops in alarm.
Though initial reports indicate no major structural damage, the quake was widely felt across the northeastern region, including in Tripura and neighboring states. The precise details of the epicenter have not yet been confirmed by local seismic authorities.
Tripura, which falls under Seismic Zone V, is highly vulnerable to seismic activity — a fact that has long concerned disaster management officials. The high risk is due to complex tectonic interactions in the region, where the Indian tectonic plate interacts with its surrounding plates.
Authorities are currently monitoring for any aftershocks and assessing the situation. Residents have been urged to remain calm and follow safety protocols, including staying away from unstable structures until a full evaluation is conducted.
