Curaçao Scripts History, Becomes Smallest Nation Ever to Qualify for FIFA World Cup

Curaçao has made footballing history by becoming the smallest nation ever to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, after a tense goalless draw against Jamaica in Kingston secured their place in next year’s expanded tournament.

The Caribbean island, home to just around 156,000 people, needed only a point from the final Group B match to seal qualification. For 90 nerve-wracking minutes at Jamaica’s National Stadium, Curaçao’s resolute defence held firm against relentless pressure from the Reggae Boyz, who created a flurry of second-half chances but failed to convert.

When the final whistle blew, Curaçao’s players collapsed in celebration on the pitch, fully aware that they had achieved a milestone few believed possible. The result ensured Curaçao topped Group B with 12 points from six matches, finishing one point ahead of Jamaica.

With the FIFA World Cup set to expand to 48 teams next year, opportunities have increased for emerging football nations. Even so, Curaçao’s qualification stands out as one of the most remarkable underdog stories in the sport’s recent history.
