Bangladesh Tribunal Sentences Sheikh Hasina to Death for Crimes Against Humanity

The International Crimes Tribunal in Bangladesh has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death after finding her guilty of crimes against humanity linked to last year’s student-led uprising. The verdict, delivered after months of proceedings, was announced on Monday amid tight security measures across Dhaka.

The three-judge panel, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, confirmed the verdict date earlier in the week. Ahead of the announcement, authorities deployed additional personnel from the Border Guard Bangladesh, Rapid Action Battalion and the army around the tribunal premises to prevent any potential unrest.

The charges stem from the July–August 2024 student uprising, during which prosecutors allege that the then Awami League government carried out a violent crackdown on protesters. Alongside Hasina, the tribunal is also trying former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, the latter of whom has since turned state witness.

Hasina and Kamal are being tried in absentia, having fled the country following the political turmoil last year. Al-Mamun, who remains in custody, has reportedly provided detailed testimony describing how orders were allegedly issued and executed during the crackdown.

Security agencies have also intensified vigilance in Gopalganj, Madaripur, and Faridpur, anticipating political gatherings or possible unrest in response to the verdict.

The tribunal’s ruling is expected to trigger significant political repercussions in a country still grappling with the fallout of last year’s unrest.
