Tripura on Sunday observed National Press Day with a state-level programme held at Sukanta Academy, where Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha inaugurated the event and highlighted the essential role of journalists in preserving democratic values.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said that newspapers and journalists play a crucial role in maintaining the structure of democracy. He described journalists as the “mirror of society,” emphasising that accurate news dissemination is both a skill and a responsibility.
This year’s theme for National Press Day was “Safeguarding Press Credibility Amidst Rising Misinformation.”
During the event, two veteran journalists—Pranmay Saha of Amarpur and Anupam Bhattacharjee of Kailashahar were honoured by the state government. They received shawls, mementoes, and financial awards as a mark of recognition for their contributions to journalism. The programme was organised by the Department of Information & Cultural Affairs (ICA).
Speaking on the significance of the day, the Chief Minister said that freedom of expression forms the backbone of the media, but journalists must remain particularly vigilant and responsible while reporting, especially in an era where misinformation spreads rapidly through social media. He stressed the need for a collective effort to counter the impact of fake news on society.
In his remarks, Dr. Saha noted that journalists from Tripura are in no way inferior in quality to those from other states. He urged senior journalists to conduct monthly workshops to guide young professionals on ethical journalism and improve their reporting skills.
He also mentioned that the state government continues to pursue justice for two journalists who were killed in Tripura in previous years, asserting that efforts are being made at the appropriate levels. The Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety, honour, and welfare of journalists, mentioning that several committees have already been formed under the ICA Department to address their needs, and their recommendations will be implemented in phases.
Editor Shanit Debroy, speaking at the event, said journalists must exercise a high level of ethical responsibility in their work. He emphasised that press freedom is essential for safeguarding public interest and national welfare, urging administrative authorities to support journalistic independence.
Agartala Press Club President Pranab Sarkar said that although media evolution has brought both benefits and challenges, social media should not be considered a substitute for mainstream journalism, as it often spreads motivated misinformation.
Executive Editor Manas Pal elaborated on this year’s theme, while ICA Secretary Dr. P. K. Chakraborty noted that the state currently has 133 registered media organisations and 313 accredited journalists. ICA Director Bimbisar Bhattacharjee and other dignitaries were also present at the event.
