Press Club of India Condemns Remarks by Bangladeshi Official Targeting Journalists

The Press Club of India (PCI) has strongly condemned remarks made by Shafiqul Alam, the official spokesperson of the Chief Adviser of the Government of Bangladesh, in which he disparaged Indian and international journalists.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Mr. Alam referred to reporters from several Indian and foreign media outlets—who recently interviewed former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina—as “Western journalists and their Indian bootlicking counterparts.”

The PCI said the comments were “especially reprehensible” since Mr. Alam is himself a former journalist. “To describe professionals from responsible media outlets pursuing a genuine news story as ‘bootlicking journalists’ is certainly not expected from a person in a responsible position,” the Club said in a statement.

Calling the remarks “unbecoming and deeply regrettable,” the PCI urged Mr. Alam to withdraw his statement and issue an unconditional apology.

The Club added that such language undermines the dignity of the press and goes against the spirit of free and fair journalism.
