Tripura Government Prioritizes Healthcare and Infrastructure Development: CM Dr. Manik Saha

Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha emphasized the state government’s commitment to improving healthcare services and infrastructure across the state during the inauguration of the 25th Annual Conference of the Association of Physicians of India (API), Tripura Chapter, on Saturday held at the Vivekananda Auditorium, Tripura Medical College.
The Chief Minister stated that the government is focusing not only on major hospitals like GB Pant and IGMC but also on upgrading the infrastructure and services of district and sub-divisional hospitals throughout the state.
During the two-day conference, renowned state doctors Dr. Bijoy Pal, Dr. Piyush Kumar Dutta, Dr. Tushar Kanti De, and Dr. Gautam Roy Choudhury were honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by the Chief Minister.
Highlighting the role of medical associations, the Chief Minister said they provide a platform for doctors to exchange knowledge and experiences, which is crucial for strengthening the healthcare system. He expressed hope that such conferences would result in meaningful discussions and decisions benefiting both the healthcare sector and society at large.
Key points highlighted by the Chief Minister include: Tripura currently has three medical colleges offering around 400 MBBS seats, and a dental college with 63 seats. A private Sijja hospital is under construction near Bodhjungnagar, with an investment of approximately ₹900 crore, alongside plans to establish a medical college. The state has already successfully conducted five kidney transplant operations. Patient welfare initiatives include subsidized meals for attendants at AGMC and GB Pant hospitals in collaboration with local Rotary Clubs. To address the shortage of doctors, the state has recruited medical professionals and established institutions for BSc Nursing, ANM, GNM, and Pharmacy courses. Operational challenges at the state’s major referral hospital, GB Pant, are being addressed through collaboration with AIIMS Delhi. Under the Prime Minister’s Jan Arogya Yojana and the Chief Minister’s Jan Arogya Yojana, over Rs 276 crore has been spent on public health initiatives. Tripura now has more than 1,100 Health & Wellness Centres, with plans underway to establish a state-of-the-art eye hospital on vacant land near ILS.
The conference was also attended by API Tripura Chapter Secretary Dr. Soumen Choudhury, API National President Professor (Dr.) Jyotirmoy Pala, AGMC Vice Principal Professor (Dr.) Tapan Majumdar, Director of Medical Education Professor (Dr.) H.P. Sharma, and other prominent members of the association. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by API Tripura Chapter President Professor (Dr.) Arindam Dutta.
