Typhoon Kalmaegi Leaves 66 Dead in Philippines, Forces Mass Evacuations

At least 66 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced after Typhoon Kalmaegi — one of the most powerful storms to strike the Philippines this year — tore through the country, bringing destructive winds and torrential rain.

Locally known as Tino, the typhoon made landfall early Tuesday, packing winds of over 130 km/h. Although it has since weakened, Kalmaegi continues to unleash heavy rainfall across several provinces, triggering landslides, flash floods, and widespread damage to infrastructure.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), 49 of the reported fatalities were from Cebu, where most victims died due to falling debris, landslides, and flooding caused by the relentless rains. Thousands of families have been forced to evacuate to temporary shelters as authorities race to provide emergency aid and restore power and communication lines in affected areas.

The typhoon is now moving towards Vietnam, where officials have warned of possible flooding and severe weather, as the country is already experiencing record levels of rainfall.
