Valencia President Carlos Mazón Resigns Amid Backlash Over 2024 Flood Response

Valencia President Carlos Mazón has resigned from his post following mounting public anger and political pressure over his administration’s handling of the catastrophic floods of 2024, which claimed 229 lives and left widespread destruction across the region.

Mazón, a prominent leader of Spain’s Conservative People’s Party (PP), had faced persistent criticism since the floods struck in late 2024. Despite repeated calls for his resignation from opposition leaders and victims’ families, he had remained defiant until now.

Public outrage reignited recently after reports surfaced that Mazón spent more than three hours at lunch with a journalist as residents struggled to escape rising floodwaters that submerged homes and vehicles. His administration was also accused of delaying emergency alerts, which critics say worsened the disaster’s impact.

While announcing his resignation, Mazón defended his government’s actions, saying there was “no administration in the world that has the tools to alter, stop or avoid an episode of torrential rains.” However, the statement did little to quell the anger of citizens who felt abandoned during the crisis.

The floods, which devastated parts of Valencia and surrounding provinces, were among the deadliest natural disasters in Spain’s recent history. Recovery efforts have continued for months, with many families still awaiting compensation and reconstruction support.

Mazón’s resignation marks a significant political turning point for the People’s Party in Valencia. The regional assembly is expected to meet soon to appoint an interim president until new elections are held.
