The Indian women’s cricket team created history by clinching their first-ever ICC Women’s ODI World Cup title, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final at Navi Mumbai on Sunday night.
After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, South Africa put India under early pressure. However, Shafali Verma’s brilliant 87-run knock anchored India’s innings and guided them to a commanding total of 298 for 7.
In the chase, South Africa appeared well placed at 209 for 5, but Deepti Sharma’s stunning bowling spell changed the course of the match. Deepti dismantled the Proteas’ batting lineup, taking five wickets for 39 runs in 9.3 overs, including the key wicket of captain Laura Wolvaardt. South Africa were eventually bowled out for 246 runs, handing India a memorable 52-run victory.
Shafali Verma was named Player of the Match for her all-round performance, while Deepti Sharma bagged the Player of the Tournament award for her consistent brilliance throughout the competition.
The victorious Indian team received a record ₹37.3 crore in prize money, marking a 239% increase from the previous edition — a testament to the growing stature of women’s cricket.
Congratulatory messages poured in from across the nation. President Droupadi Murmu hailed the win as a “watershed moment” for Indian women’s cricket, praising the players for their determination and inspiring performance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the victory as “spectacular,” saying the team’s skill, confidence, and teamwork had made the country proud. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla lauded the players for “winning hearts across the nation,” while Union Home Minister Amit Shah called the triumph “a crowning moment for the nation,” adding that Team India had “elevated India’s pride to the skies.”
