Tripura: ‘Run for Unity’ Marks Birth Anniversary of Sardar Patel, the Iron Man of India

Tripura along with the rest of India on Friday celebrated the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel — the nation’s first Deputy Prime Minister and a towering figure in India’s freedom struggle — as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day).

Born on October 31, 1875, Sardar Patel is revered as the “Iron Man of India” for his indomitable will, statesmanship, and his pivotal role in integrating more than 560 princely states into a united India after independence. His commitment to national unity and integrity remains a guiding light for the nation.

To mark the occasion, the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports of the state government organized a vibrant ‘Run for Unity’ early Friday morning from Vivekananda Stadium. The event was formally flagged off by Sports Minister Tinku Roy.

Prominent personalities including Sunil Deodhar, founder of My India Foundation; Rajib Bhattacharjee, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha); and Kalyani Roy, Chief Whip of the State Legislative Assembly, graced the event along with several dignitaries.

The unity run witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, NCC cadets, and personnel from various security forces. The runners began from Vivekananda Stadium, traversed through key city routes, and concluded at Umakanta Academy amid cheers and patriotic fervor.

Speaking on the occasion, the Sports Minister emphasized the relevance of Sardar Patel’s vision in today’s times, calling upon the youth to uphold the spirit of unity and integrity.
