CM Dr Manik Saha attends 17th Foundation Day of College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry

Tripura has already achieved self-sufficiency in meat production, and efforts are underway to attain the same in milk and egg production, said Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha on Thursday while inaugurating the 17th Foundation Day celebration of the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry at R.K. Nagar.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that animal husbandry plays a significant role in strengthening the rural economy, not only as a means of livelihood for families but also as a pillar of socio-economic growth in the state. He highlighted the crucial contribution of the Animal Resources Development Department (ARDD) toward achieving this goal.

As part of the celebration, Dr. Saha also inaugurated the extension of the college’s academic building, the modernization of its laboratory, and a voluntary blood donation camp.

The Chief Minister stated that the government has placed strong emphasis on increasing the production of animal-based proteins in the state. “The ARDD has been implementing several schemes to make Tripura self-reliant in milk, egg, and meat production. The department is actively working with dairy cooperatives and livestock farmers to achieve this goal, creating new avenues for employment in rural areas,” he said.

Dr. Saha lauded the contribution of the college to veterinary education and research, describing it as “at par with any other leading veterinary institution in India.” He urged students and faculty members to remain dedicated to academic excellence, innovation, and research. “Students must pursue their studies with responsibility and creative thinking to enhance their own potential,” he added.

The Chief Minister also mentioned several key government initiatives aimed at supporting livestock farmers — including the Mukhyamantri Unnoto Godhan Prokolpo, Pashupalak Samman Nidhi, Mobile Veterinary Units, Mukhyamantri Prani Sampad Vikash Yojana (Duck and Poultry Scheme), and the National Programme for Dairy Development.

Highlighting new investments, he informed that in the 2025–26 state budget, the government has proposed to launch 55 new Mini Mobile Veterinary Units with an allocation of Rs 4.5 crore.

During the event, Dr. Jewel Debnath was specially felicitated for his research on indigenous duck breeds. The Chief Minister presented him with a memento in recognition of his contribution.

Addressing the gathering, Animal Resources Development Minister Sudhanshu Das said that the college, established in 2009, has played a key role in advancing animal husbandry education and research in the state. He noted that the department’s activities are primarily focused on three areas — conservation and development of livestock, strengthening the rural economy through animal resources, and creating employment opportunities.

Minister Das also highlighted the department’s Mobile Veterinary Ambulance Service and other welfare schemes benefiting livestock owners.
