India, US Continue Talks to Finalize Trade Deal: MEA

India remains engaged with the United States to finalize a long-pending trade deal, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday. Briefing the media in New Delhi, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that discussions between the two sides are ongoing.

“We continue to remain engaged with our US counterparts on finalizing the trade deal,” Jaiswal said, emphasizing that both nations are holding regular consultations to address pending issues.

Commenting on the recent US sanctions on Russian oil companies, the spokesperson said that New Delhi is carefully studying their implications. “Our decisions naturally take into account the evolving dynamics of the global market,” he said, adding that India’s energy policy is guided by the need to secure affordable and reliable energy from diverse sources to meet the needs of its 1.4 billion citizens.

On regional issues, Jaiswal took a swipe at Pakistan’s reaction to developments in Afghanistan, saying that Islamabad appears infuriated by Kabul’s assertion of sovereignty over its own territories. He noted that Pakistan “seems to think it has the right to practice cross-border terrorism with impunity,” a view that, he said, is unacceptable to its neighbours.

Reaffirming India’s support for Afghanistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence, Jaiswal said New Delhi remains committed to assisting Afghanistan in its development efforts. “India stands ready to support Afghanistan in sustainable water management, including hydroelectric projects,” he said, recalling India’s previous cooperation on infrastructure such as the Salma Dam in Herat province.

On the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) involving India, the US, Japan, and Australia, Jaiswal described the grouping as “a valuable forum for discussions on shared interests in various areas.” He added that any Leaders’ Summit of the Quad partners is arranged through diplomatic consultations among the four nations.
