A suspected Maoist operative believed to be involved in the recent improvised explosive device (IED) blast on a railway track in Assam’s Kokrajhar district was killed in a police encounter during an anti-insurgency operation early Saturday, officials said.
Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police Pushpraj Singh said the encounter took place during a pre-dawn raid at Nadanguri, where security forces had launched a search operation to trace those responsible for Thursday’s railway explosion.
“Based on intelligence inputs, we traced a group of militants hiding in the area. When police personnel approached, they came under fire. Our team retaliated, forcing the militants to flee. During a search of the site, one injured militant was found and taken to hospital, where he was declared dead,” Singh told reporters.
Police recovered a pistol, two grenades, and several identification documents, including a voter ID card and an Aadhaar card, from the encounter site.
The slain militant was identified as Apil Murmu alias Rohit Murmu (40), who, according to police, had close links with Maoist networks and was wanted in multiple insurgency-related cases across Assam and Jharkhand.
Superintendent Singh said Murmu had been active in extremist violence since 2015 and was known to maintain dual identities—operating as Rohit Murmu in Jharkhand and Apil Murmu in the Kachugaon–Grahampur area of Assam.
A team of Jharkhand Police had also joined the Kokrajhar operation as part of a coordinated effort to track down the wanted extremist.
“Murmu was suspected to have played a role in the October 2024 train blast in Jharkhand, which bore similarities to the recent Kokrajhar explosion. Evidence suggests he may have orchestrated both incidents,” Singh added.
Authorities said that security has been tightened across lower Assam, particularly along railway routes, as investigations continue into possible Maoist links behind the recent blasts.
