Tripura bans import of pigs from other states to prevent disease outbreak
Oct 23, 2025
The Department of Animal Resources Development has issued a notification imposing restrictions on the transportation of pigs from outside the state in view of the outbreak of infectious diseases affecting pigs. The move aims to prevent losses to local pig farmers and curb the spread of infections.
As per the notification, the transport of pigs into or through Tripura from other states will remain prohibited until further orders. Anyone intending to bring pigs from outside must obtain prior approval from the Department of Animal Resources Development.
At the state’s entry points, whether by rail or road, any consignment of pigs will be allowed entry only in compliance with Rule 16 of the Transportation of Animals Rules, 2001. The department’s veterinary officers will examine the animals’ health and vaccination records before granting clearance.
Importers are required to inform the Director of the department at least 48 hours before the animals reach the state border. Pigs imported for commercial purposes will not be permitted entry under any circumstances.
The notification also states that all costs related to veterinary health checks at entry points must be borne by the transporter. In case any pig is found to be infected or unfit, it must be removed from the state as per government regulations, and the responsibility for such removal will rest entirely on the transporter.
The department issued the advisory to safeguard the state’s pig population and protect local farmers from potential outbreaks.
