National Citizen Party Demands Reconstitution of Bangladesh Election Commission Ahead of Upcoming Polls
Oct 23, 2025
The National Citizen Party (NCP) has raised serious concerns over the impartiality of the Bangladesh Election Commission (EC), urging the government to reconstitute the entire commission ahead of the forthcoming national elections.
During a meeting with Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the interim government, NCP convener Nahid Islam accused the Election Commission of lacking transparency and independence in both its formation and operations. “A neutral Election Commission is essential for a fair election,” Islam emphasized, warning that the commission’s credibility has already been compromised.
The NCP further alleged that the EC showed bias by granting preferential treatment to certain political parties during the registration of electoral symbols. The party also accused the commission of using administrative channels to provide undue support to favored groups.
In addition, the NCP claimed that recent postings of deputy commissioners and police superintendents had been influenced by political interests, undermining the neutrality of the electoral process.
Apart from demanding the restructuring of the Election Commission, the NCP called for a clear and timely resolution regarding justice for the families of martyrs and victims of the July 2024 uprising. The party cautioned that without comprehensive institutional reforms, the credibility of the upcoming elections would be seriously compromised.
