10 Tonnes of Cannabis Destroyed in Major Anti-Narcotics Operation in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills

In a major anti-narcotics operation, authorities in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district have destroyed approximately 10 tonnes of cannabis plants illegally cultivated across five hectares of land. The operation was carried out at Laitlulong village in the Sohiong area, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The joint operation was led by the East Khasi Hills district police in coordination with the Forest Department, Excise Department, and the Anti-Narcotics Task Force. The multi-department team conducted a systematic drive to uproot and destroy cannabis plants that were reportedly being cultivated across several households in the area.

Police said no arrests have been made so far in connection with the illegal plantations, but investigations are underway to identify those responsible for the cultivation.

Cultivation of cannabis is a punishable offence under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and the authorities reiterated their commitment to enforcing the law through similar operations in other parts of the district.

The district administration and law enforcement agencies have also urged residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious or unlawful activities. They called for greater community cooperation to ensure peace and maintain law and order in the region.
