Home Ministry Holds First Round of Formal Talks with Ladakh Leaders

The Union Home Ministry’s High-Powered Committee (HPC) on Ladakh convened its first formal dialogue with regional leaders in New Delhi on Wednesday, marking a significant step toward addressing long-standing political and administrative concerns in the Union Territory.

The meeting brought together representatives from the Apex Body Leh (ABL) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), the two key organizations representing the interests of the people of Leh and Kargil respectively. This dialogue is the first formal engagement between the central government and Ladakh’s leadership since recent violence erupted in the region last month.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, KDA representative Sajjad Hussain Kargili reiterated the core demand of the Ladakhi people: the restoration of democracy and the granting of full statehood to Ladakh. He emphasized that this demand has remained consistent for the past six years.

“This issue cannot be resolved in one or two meetings,” Kargili said, highlighting the complexity of the matter and the need for continued engagement. “We are hopeful that this dialogue process will lead to a meaningful and lasting solution.”

The establishment of a formal dialogue mechanism through the Home Ministry's High-Powered Committee signals the central government's willingness to engage with Ladakh’s leadership on key political, constitutional, and developmental issues.
