Veteran Actor Govardhan Asrani Passes Away in Mumbai at 84


Veteran Bollywood actor Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, passed away in Mumbai on Monday at the age of 84. Asrani, renowned for his iconic role as the quirky jailer in the blockbuster film Sholay, died after battling breathing complications and fluid accumulation in his lungs.

Born on January 1, 1941, in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Asrani had a prolific career spanning over five decades, appearing in more than 300 films across Hindi and Gujarati cinema. His versatility as a comedian and character actor won him immense popularity and respect in the film industry.

His memorable portrayal of the jailer in Sholay remains etched in the memories of audiences, especially for his iconic dialogue, “Hum Angrezon ke zamaane ke jailer hain...” Beyond acting, Asrani also contributed as a writer and director, showcasing his multifaceted talent.

Asrani’s nephew confirmed that the veteran actor passed away around 3 pm in Mumbai. In accordance with his wishes, his last rites were conducted privately at the Santacruz crematorium, avoiding any public spectacle.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling Asrani “a gifted entertainer and truly versatile artist” who made an enduring impact on Indian cinema.

The film fraternity and fans have expressed deep sorrow over the loss of one of Bollywood’s most beloved comedic actors. Asrani’s humility and dedication to his craft continue to inspire generations of actors.
