18 Illegal Foreign Nationals Apprehended and Deported from Assam’s Sribhumi: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that 18 illegal foreign nationals were apprehended and subsequently deported from the Sribhumi district of Assam.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister likened the operation to a cricketing manoeuvre, stating: “Just like Kohli’s iconic straight drive, we are executing pushbacks straight back to the territory of illegal infiltrators. Eighteen such pitch invaders have been pushed back early this morning from Sribhumi.”

While the nationality and identity of the individuals have not been disclosed, Sribhumi is one of several districts in Assam that shares a 267.5-kilometre international border with Bangladesh. Other bordering districts include Cachar, Dhubri, and South Salmara-Mankachar.

The pushback operation reportedly took place near the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Sutarkandi in Sribhumi — one of three ICPs along the India-Bangladesh border in the Northeast, alongside those in Dawki (Meghalaya) and Akhaura (Tripura).

CM Sarma also tied the operation to the festive season, remarking: “Diwali is really the time when the good defeats the evil.”
