Northeast Emerges as India's New Growth Engine: Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia

Union Minister for the Development of the North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia, on Friday said that the Northeast has emerged as the new growth engine of India, driven by a decade of sustained infrastructure development and strategic investment.

Addressing the media in New Delhi on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of his ministry’s achievements, Mr. Scindia highlighted the transformative progress made in the region under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the past 11 years.

“In the last decade, we have not only brought the Northeast into the mainstream of development but have also positioned it as a vital contributor to India’s economic growth,” he said.

Mr. Scindia pointed out that the number of operational airports in the Northeast has nearly doubled—from 9 to 17—making the region more accessible and better connected. Similarly, the total length of National Highways in the region has increased significantly, from 10,000 kilometres to 16,000 kilometres, enhancing road connectivity and regional trade.

The Minister also underscored the success of the Rising North East summit held in May this year, where the government secured investment commitments worth ₹4.48 lakh crore. He noted that this was a major step towards unlocking the untapped economic and industrial potential of the Northeast.

In a move to promote national integration and cultural exchange, Mr. Scindia announced that under the Ashtalakshmi Darshan initiative, 3,200 students from across India will be visiting the Northeastern states. The program, launched by Prime Minister Modi, aims to foster greater understanding and appreciation of the region's rich cultural heritage.

“The Northeast is no longer on the fringes of development—it is now driving the growth narrative of New India,” Mr. Scindia asserted.
