Freight Wagon of Drugs Busted in Tripura: Rs 10 Cr worth of Cough Syrup Seized
Oct 17, 2025In one of the biggest drug seizures in Tripura’s recent history, authorities uncovered a freight wagon packed with illegal cough syrup, worth over Rs 10 crore in the international market. The massive bust has exposed alarming gaps in railway security and signaled the growing strength of drug cartels operating through the Northeast.
Acting on a confidential tip-off, a high-level joint operation was launched on Thursday by Jirania Sub-Division Police under the leadership of SDPO Sudhir Kumar, in coordination with the Railway Police. Upon inspection of the goods train, officials discovered 600 bags containing 90,000 bottles of banned cough syrup — a substance often misused as a narcotic.
Speaking to the press, SDPO Sudhir Kumar confirmed the seizure and announced that a formal case has been registered. He further stated that a full-scale investigation is underway to track down the masterminds behind this smuggling attempt.
“This is a massive breakthrough. It’s a clear message to the drug syndicates — your time is up. We are committed to a drug-free Tripura and we seek public cooperation in this fight,” said Kumar.
The incident has triggered serious questions about the integrity of the railway cargo system. How a fully loaded freight wagon carrying illicit substances traveled undetected has raised suspicions of internal collusion or gross negligence within railway operations.
Sources indicate this could be part of a well-organized, inter-state or possibly cross-border drug network, exploiting loopholes in transport logistics to push illegal substances into the state.
The seized cough syrup has been sent for forensic verification. Investigation teams are tracking supply routes, handlers, and potential links to larger drug syndicates. Railway authorities are expected to face inquiry regarding lapses in cargo inspection and security protocols. Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
