Tripura Aims for Tourism Boom with Rs 500-Crore Investment Plan: Minister Sushanta Chowdhury

In a major push to position Tripura as a premier tourism destination, the state government has announced seven ambitious projects with a combined investment exceeding Rs 500 crore. The announcement was made during the National Conference of Tourism Ministers in Rajasthan, attended by Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

Addressing the conference, Tripura’s Tourism and Transport Minister, Sushanta Chowdhury, criticized the previous Left Front government for decades of neglect in the tourism sector. “Tripura enjoys a unique geographical location, bordered by Bangladesh on three sides. Unfortunately, the previous regime made no meaningful efforts to promote tourism. Real transformation began only after 2018, when our government took office with a vision to make Tripura a promising tourist hub,” Chowdhury said.

He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha for their “unwavering support and guidance,” which have significantly boosted Tripura’s tourism prospects. “According to a recent Ministry of Tourism report, Tripura now ranks second in foreign tourist inflow among all North Eastern states. This remarkable achievement reflects our growing appeal,” he added.

Tourism Secretary U K Chakma highlighted the state’s focus on eco-tourism and sustainable development, noting that nearly two-thirds of Tripura is forested. He emphasized that major attractions such as Ujjayanta Palace, Neermahal, Unakoti, Tripura Sundari Temple, Chabimura, Dumboor Lake, Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary, and Jampui Hills are receiving significant infrastructure upgrades.

Chakma also pointed out that Tripura now has the second-largest airport in the North East, offering direct connectivity to Delhi, Kolkata, and other major cities—a crucial factor in driving tourism growth.

The proposed Rs 500-crore projects include combined adventure, eco-tourism, and water park at Sachindranagar Colony, Jirania, modeled on Kolkata’s Nicco Park, adventure park at Mohanpur, grand replica of the 51 Shakti Peethas at Bandowar, Udaipur (Gomati district), infrastructure upgrades at Chabimura and Unakoti, waterfront development in Amarpur and launch of Paryatan Sahayak Prakalp, a tourism entrepreneurship scheme to empower local stakeholders

Tripura has seen a 64.08% rise in domestic tourist arrivals, from 3.66 lakh to 6.01 lakh, and a 36.16% increase in foreign visitors, reaching 91,000 between 2023 and 2024. “These figures reflect growing confidence among travelers in Tripura as a safe, scenic, and sustainable destination,” Chakma said.
