Three Political Parties in Meghalaya Face Deregistration Over Inactivity

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to delist three political parties from Meghalaya for remaining inactive and failing to contest any elections for over six years.

The parties facing removal from the Commission's list of Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs) are the Meghalaya Democratic Party (MDP), headquartered at Mission Compound; the North East Social Democratic Party (NESDP) from Mawlai Mawdatbaki; and the Regional Democratic Secular Congress (RDSC), based in Lower Lumparing.

This move comes as part of a broader nationwide cleanup, where the ECI has identified 474 such inactive parties for potential deregistration. According to the Representation of the People Act, 1951, any registered political party that fails to participate in elections for six consecutive years is liable to lose its registration status.

Election Commission officials confirmed that notices were previously issued to the concerned parties, giving them an opportunity to explain their prolonged inactivity. However, with no credible response or signs of political activity, the Commission is now proceeding with the formal process of delisting.
