Defence Minister Approves 100% Increase in Welfare Grants for Ex-Servicemen and Their Families

In a significant move aimed at enhancing the welfare of India's armed forces veterans, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved a 100 percent hike in financial assistance provided to Ex-Servicemen and their dependents. The revised rates will come into effect for all applications submitted from November 1, 2025, onwards.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the Penury Grant which supports aged and financially vulnerable veterans and their widows has been doubled from Rs 4,000 to Rs 8,000 per month per beneficiary. This grant is specifically intended for non-pensioner Ex-Servicemen and their widows who are above 65 years of age and have no regular source of income, offering them sustained financial support for life.

In addition, the Education Grant has been increased from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 per month per child, benefiting up to two dependent children per family. The Marriage Grant has also seen a substantial hike, rising from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000 per beneficiary.

These welfare schemes are funded through the Raksha Mantri Ex-Servicemen Welfare Fund, which is a component of the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF). The Ministry estimates that the revised grants will result in an annual financial implication of approximately Rs 257 crore.

The decision underscores the government’s continued commitment to honouring the service and sacrifices of India’s veterans by strengthening the social security framework for Ex-Servicemen, especially those who do not receive pensions.
