Tripura observes International Day of Older Persons

The State Government is sincerely working towards ensuring due respect and comprehensive welfare for senior citizens, said Minister for Social Welfare and Social Education, Tinku Roy. The minister on Tuesday inaugurated International Day of Older Persons–2025 celebration at Agartala Town Hall.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Roy said, “Elderly persons are the guiding lights of society. They are the true mentors of our civilization, showing us the way forward through their experience and wisdom. The younger generation must follow in their footsteps.”

He emphasized that the government attaches great importance to the dignity and well-being of senior citizens and is taking consistent measures to address their needs. The Minister also expressed concern over the growing trend of neglect towards elderly parents, saying, “Parents sacrifice everything to raise their children, yet many sons and daughters fail to care for them in their old age. This is not the India we aspire to build.”

Urging the elderly to play an active social role, the Minister added, “Rights cannot be safeguarded through legal battles alone. I appeal to our senior citizens to guide the younger generation and raise awareness against injustice, discrimination, and superstition.”

As part of the celebration, district-level awards were presented to senior citizens in recognition of their contribution and achievements.
