Supreme Court Orders CBI Probe into Karur Stampede; Committee to Supervise Investigation

The Supreme Court ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the tragic Karur stampede that claimed the lives of at least 41 people during a political rally in Tamil Nadu. The incident took place on September 27 at a meeting organised by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a political party founded by popular Tamil actor Vijay.

A bench comprising Justices J.K. Maheshwari and N.V. Anjaria issued the direction while hearing a petition filed by TVK challenging an earlier order of the Madras High Court. The High Court had ordered a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the incident, which the party opposed, seeking a central agency investigation instead.

To ensure transparency and credibility, the apex court constituted a three-member supervisory committee to oversee the CBI investigation. The committee will be headed by former Supreme Court judge, Justice Ajay Rastogi.

The court further directed that two Indian Police Service (IPS) officers—preferably of the Tamil Nadu cadre but not natives of the state—be included in the committee. These officers, not below the rank of Inspector General of Police (IGP), will be selected by Justice Rastogi in consultation with the CBI.

The Court emphasized the importance of an impartial and thorough investigation, given the scale and sensitivity of the tragedy.

The stampede, which occurred at a private event organized by TVK in Karur district, raised serious concerns over crowd management and public safety at political gatherings in the state. The incident has sparked widespread criticism and demands for accountability.
